HSM Annual conference 2019

The HSM 2019 program started in a warm atmosphere in spite of the slightly cool weather. Later the atmosphere did not change and the weather improved a lot, so hopefully every participant could feel no time wasted on two full days in Siófok.

Our most famous guest was Professor Harald Rose (University of Ulm, Ulm, Germany), who was able to catch the attention of the entire audience with his enjoyable presentation, which included many personal experiences throughout the development of electron microscopy.

We are also grateful to the Professor for having listened to most of the lectures presented in Hungarian – though supported by English subtitles to help the understandings for our guests -, and even more that in many cases professor Rose  had questions and helpful remarks to the lecturer.

Dr. Gábor Nyiri (MTA, KOKI) presented the advantages, disadvantages and applicability of the most advanced 3D electron microscope techniques currently used in life science in a very well-followable way for material scientists, too.

The PhD and TDK student mini-lectures took place on Thursday and Friday afternoons. Almost every young lecturer – altogether 19 – managed to keep the given short time precisely and to present the most important facts of the work to those who are not familiar with the subject, too. The Best Young Lecturer title was won by Dániel Varga (University of Szeged) for his lively performance.

We have to mention the closing lecture on Thursday  held by Balázs Rózsa, too. His talk was so well accepted by the audience that they talked enthusiastically about it even during the evening wine tasting, too, although Béla Pécz and Zoltán Kristóf really invested a great deal of work in the selection and description of wines.

In addition to the invited lecture given on advanced 3D electron microscopy, our support companies also presented their developments in this field. We have learned a lot about the applicability and limitations of different EM techniques .

After the conference, some commented that this conference was of the highest quality so far. Either they are right or not, the organizers are grateful to the lecturers for the high level presentations, to the companies for their support to make this conference possible, and last but not least, to the active audience of the lectures.

See you next year!
